Will I be able to lead product development after doing a CSPO course?

It depends on what you mean by lead.

You won’t be able to tell people how to do their jobs and you won’t be able to tell people what to do. That is more in the domain of project management than product ownership.

You will, however, be able to articulate and communicate a strong product vision, purpose and mission that inspires your scrum team to develop the best possible version of the product they are capable of.

You will be able to break an epic story of the product into small, workable items that can be prioritised in a backlog for the development team to work through.

You will be able to collaborate with others to identify which elements of product development will truly delight customers and emphasise why it is important to do so.

So, ‘leadership’ in the form of inspiring others and providing a very clear pathway to success is definitely on the cards but ‘leadership’ in the context of management will not be on your agenda at all.

Will you be ready to assume the role of a Scrum Product Owner in a Scrum Team after completing the CSPO course?

You will be at the very start of your journey in product ownership but you will be capable of getting on with the job from day one. You will be able to take ownership of the role and begin to learn through creative collaboration with others and a process of continuous improvement.

In the beginning, you will rely on the guidance of your scrum team, product stakeholders and customers but over time, your confidence in terms of decision-making in the product space will grow.

Scrum is a process of continuous improvement and learning. Your career as a product owner is no different. You will also grow and nurture your career as you move through your apprenticeship phase and onto the advanced, journeyman phase of your career.
