And what’s behind Spotify’s staggering success?

Let’s decode it together.

Spotify’s Staggering Success

First, we can’t ignore the significance of Spotify’s success and how this amazing business model has grown worldwide. 🌍

Imagine the power of having any song you fancy, whenever, wherever! And, as I always say, “At the core of that business is some phenomenal technology. So they are a tech firm that happens to stream music.

Let’s break down why Spotify is such a phenomenal success:

  • Business Growth: Over the last couple of decades, Spotify rose from an unknown entity to a global synonym for music streaming.
  • On-Demand Service: The brand delivered the magic of availability on demand. Any music, anytime, anywhere and become synonymous with music streaming worldwide.
  • Tech Titan: At its core, Spotify isn’t just about music; it’s a tech powerhouse. They are a tech firm that happens to stream music.

Unveiling the Spotify Model

Over a decade ago, some of Spotify’s engineering teams showcased “how Spotify builds stuff” in YouTube videos. It’s as though they shared their secret sauce.

Spotify wasn’t just being different; they wanted to create their own culture.

Here are some key takeaways from the “Spotify Model” that I observed: 🧩

  • Redefining Teams: They brought fresh terms like squads instead of teams. It wasn’t about being trendy but making it their own within their culture. 🖥️
  • Squads, Chapters, and Guilds: They introduced new structures and terminologies. This is how Spotify built it became a blueprint for many.

And why can’t you call a team a squad?

While many thought of it as a representation of the entire company, it was just their way of saying, ‘This is how we work.’

Copycat Syndrome

In the business world, there’s always that temptation to mimic. And here’s where it gets interesting. Witnessing Spotify’s rise, it seemed everyone wanted a piece of the action, and why not?

Spotting Spotify’s ascension, many thought, “That’s amazing! Let’s do the Spotify model!”

But while some companies were renaming teams to squads, I couldn’t help but think, why do you want to call them a squad?

It all boils down to evolution vs stagnation.

And here’s why.

While many companies replicated the Spotify model, many missed the mark completely. They moved from one static methodology to another without imbibing the essence of continuous improvement.

A Historical Parallel

Drawing from history, this urge to copy isn’t new. People wanted to copy Toyota, this amazing Japanese car firm. In the 50s-80s, companies wanted to mimic Toyota’s success. Some even copied practices like morning callisthenics! 🚗

But as I often chuckle, simply mimicking Toyota workers by doing morning exercises doesn’t capture the essence of their success.

The core lesson – it’s not about cloning practices. It’s about understanding the journey and the ethos of rigorous continuous improvement.

Beyond Replication

Spotify is who they are and how they work, constantly improved and continuously evolving. It’s not about copying a model but understanding and internalising it.

While it’s tempting to ape a successful model, the magic lies in:

Continuous Improvement by embracing the mindset of trial, learning, refining, and evolving. 🌱

Always be authentic. Don’t copy someone else. Be a better version of yourself.

The Real Secret Sauce

I’ve always believed that chasing after another’s success won’t yield lasting results.

The authentic secret sauce lies not in imitation but in constant introspection and adaptation. Understand the philosophy, not just the framework.
