Things I’ve learned from the Last Year

My Agile and Scrum articles almost always cover just that – Agile and Scrum, but today, I’d like to cover three powerful lessons I’ve learned over the past year as the world has transformed in ways we could hardly anticipate.

These lessons significantly influenced both my professional and personal life. In the spirit of openness, I’d like to discuss them today with the hope that they may resonate or offer a fresh perspective as you navigate your journey.

Like many of us at times in our lives, I’ve been going through a transition, and I’d like to share the main lessons I’ve learned with you all. 🌱

Lesson 1: The Power of Delegation

The past year, filled with transition and upheaval, has taught me a profound lesson about the importance of delegation. I learned it’s okay to step back and allow others to carry the torch when needed. The reality is that it’s not only okay but also necessary.

I decided to take some downtime. I realised that I should step away from work more than traditionally I would have and it turns out that’s okay. 💥

It’s not only okay. It’s more than okay. 🚀

For me, it’s been a year of recognising and truly understanding that “it’s not all on your shoulders and taking this approach has allowed me to achieve what I want to do with actually less effort on my part.

Remember, you can’t do it all and that’s okay.

By enlisting the help of others and creating systems around me, I was able to expand my impact. Not only could I produce these educational videos 🎥, but I also had a dedicated team to edit them, tune them, and disseminate them across the web.

This wasn’t about reducing my workload; and it was about increasing our collective impact.

So, I urge you to reflect before you reach a point of burnout and explore delegation. Is there work you’re doing today that someone else could do for you?

Trust me, acknowledging that it’s not all on your shoulders is liberating and can lead to a more significant impact in the long run.

Lesson 2: The Actual Value of Time

The second lesson revolves around time. It’s about recognising that “you only have a finite amount of time.

Time is the only asset we can’t buy more of, and it’s so precious. Over the last year, I learned the importance of using my time wisely and with intent. In the Agile world, we constantly discuss value – ensuring the most valuable tasks get priority.

I realised that the same principle applies to our lives. As the product owners of our lives, are we spending our time on what truly matters? 💥

This realisation, along with the act of delegation, allowed me to carve out time to spend with my family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, a source of immeasurable value to me.

So again, I pose a question to you: Are you using your time on the things that matter most to you?

Remember, we are the product owners of our own lives.

Lesson 3: The Power of In-Person Connections

Now, we go from the delegation and the value of time to the power of in-person connections.

Finally, my third, lighter yet equally powerful lesson centres on the power of in-person interactions. Yes, we’ve all had to adapt to virtual workspaces, but the sheer potential of face-to-face connections cannot be understated. 💥

I always say, “You want to help people you like and it’s so much easier to like somebody when you’ve sat down and chatted about something that matters to you deeply.”

In-person collaboration brings focus and skills to the table and fosters relationships and rapport among team members. It humanises us all, deepens connections, and promotes a sense of camaraderie that can powerfully drive both individual and team performance.

Remember, in-person interactions, talking about personal interests, hobbies, or even TV shows, humanise us, fostering relationships that can profoundly affect your work and the overall team dynamic.

Always remember that time is the most important thing we all have and time is something we aren’t getting, so use it wisely. Work collaboratively to free up time and understand the immeasurable value of in-person connections. 🚀
